Gastroenteritis Clinical Practice Guidelines

Diarrheal illness and dehydration are among the main causes of childhood fatality around the world. Even in the United States, diarrheal illness produces significant morbidity and mortality. Many children with vomiting and diarrhea present to emergency departments where they undergo laboratory testing and receive intravenous re-hydration. By streamlining the management of gastroenteritis through a clinical prediction rule, we hope to more accurately identify which children who present to ED may be candidates for oral rehydration.

In this section of the website you will find a tool that will assist you in calculating a patients dehydration score. This score can be used to determine the degree of dehydration and based on this score we will also provide you with a suggested ED management plan.
