Gastroenteritis

What is gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis is sometimes called the "stomach flu" and it is usually caused by a virus. This virus causes vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramping and sometimes fever. Children usually feel sick for 2-7 days before they get better on their own.

If your child loses too much water and minerals they can get what doctors call "dehydration." Severe dehydration can be dangerous. To prevent dehydration, children with gastroenteritis need to drink enough fluids. It is important to give your child the right type of fluids if they are dehydrated.
