Gastroenteritis

What medications can I give at home?

Unfortunately, there are no medications that will "cure" viral gastroenteritis. Viral gastroenteritis is caused by a virus and not bacteria, so antibiotics will not help. Your child will typically get better on his or her own within a few days. However, here are some guidelines to help make your child more comfortable while he or she recovers:

  • Take any medications that your doctor prescribes
  • You may use acetaminophen (Children's Tylenol) to relieve discomfort or fussiness
  • In infants over 6 months, ibuprofen (Children's Motrin) may be used instead of Tylenol
  • Do not give over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medicines (such as Imodium or Pepto-Bismol)
  • Never give aspirin to children under 18 years of age, as it can be dangerous
