Job Summary:
UMMC/UMMCH summer internship program for medical students completing their 1st year of medical school. This position is 32-40 hours per week for an 8 week period of time (from mid-June to about mid-August) to impact the care of patients while gaining valuable healthcare and research skills. The intern will be provided unique opportunities to obtain knowledge of strategic quality improvement methodologies and important patient safety principles.

Job Expectations:
" Core work will align with the strategic plan across experience, excellence, and engagement
" Oversight and weekly meetings with hospital leadership
" Participate in a quality improvement educational sessions with adult/pediatric residents
" Hands on experience with data collection and entry and chart reviews
" Patient experience rounding with providers, nurses, patients and family
" Attend team meetings/discussions
" Research best practice of top decile performers for AHRQ Patient Safety Indicators and other quality measures
" Expand on ones understanding of hospital operations and quality and safety agenda
" Participate in process improvement projects which may include:
Mortality case review, K-card rounding for hospital acquired conditions, Adverse event reporting reconciliation, Minnesota Community Measures chart review and data validation, Patient Safety Organization (PSO) data upload assistance
" Other responsibilities as assigned

" Provides patient education based on as assessment of learning needs of patient/care giver.
" Fulfills all organizational requirements
" Completes all required learning relevant to the role
" Complies with all relevant laws, regulation and policies
" Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications to Fulfill Job Responsibilities:
Required Education
" Actively enrolled in and completed first year of medical school

Additional Requirements (must be obtained or completed within a period of time):
" Familiarity with spreadsheets and awareness of electronic health record
